Cole Palmer admits it was ‘very strange’ to take on his former club Manchester City as a Chelsea player but also described it as ‘amazing’ as the sides played out a classic 4-4 draw.

The manic game at Stamford Bridge swung one way and then the other as Manchester City took an early lead, Chelsea went ahead themselves, the visitors got back in front late on, but Palmer’s stoppage time penalty saw the match finish level.

The 21-year-old has now scored four Premier League goals since arriving from Manchester City in September and been impressive in breaking into the Chelsea starting XI so quickly.

He admits that it was a tricky day in terms of emotions, but ultimately enjoyed the experience against his old friends and teammates.

‘Very, very strange,’ Palmer told Sky Sports of facing his old side. ‘First time I’ve played against City since I left, but I’ve got the utmost respect for the club that I spent 15 years at. It was nice to see some friends, unlucky not to get the win but it was a great game.’

Asked whether he had friends and family in Manchester who will be annoyed with him, he said: ‘Yeah probably, got many City fans I know. But it’s the game innit.

‘It was amazing, I was excited before the game to see some faces and show what I can do. It was a great game, we went behind a few times and bounced back.’

Palmer’s penalty was assured and beat the diving Ederson into the top corner, although it was not down to practice on the training pitch.

‘Long time waiting, but I felt confident. I’ve had a few penalties now. Just keep calm, 90-something minute, stay focussed and strike it,’ he said.

‘I’m not going to say I work on them because I don’t, I trust in my natural ability and thankfully it went in.’
