Viktor Gyokeres’ release clause may not be enough to scare off Chelsea in January.

Chelsea will have the chance to sign a new striker next month when the transfer window opens and it looks like Viktor Gyokeres could be an option for them

According to Correio da Manha, the Blues are interested in signing the Sporting Lisbon star and are not frightened by his €100m (£86.6m) release clause.

As a result, the Portuguese outlet has claimed that manager Ruben Amorim is losing sleep over his talisman, fearing that he could lose him soon.

Gyokeres’ is Sporting’s top scorer this season, netting 17 times in 20 appearances.

Sporting only signed Gyokeres from Coventry City in the summer, but there does look like there is a real possibility of the Portuguese club losing him.

The 25-year-old has been in terrific form and a club like Chelsea can obviously afford to pay his release clause.

Amorim is right to be worried, especially with it now seeming like Victor Osimhen will be staying at Napoli in January.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano recently stated that Osimhen joining Chelsea at the start of the new year looks impossible.

If Osimhen is not on the market, then Chelsea could very well turn to an alternative target like Gyokeres instead of waiting until the summer for the Nigerian.

A lot could depend on Mauricio Pochettino. If he feels that he can get to the end of the season with Nicolas Jackson, Armando Broja, and Christopher Nkunku, who has just returned from injury, then the Blues may just bide their time. But if not, a move for Gyokeres seems very plausible.

His release clause makes him attainable and it looks like Chelsea are not afraid to trigger it. Amorim will be desperate for them not to, but you probably cannot rule it out.
