Broos Shifts Focus To World Cup After Nations Cup Exit

South Africa coach Hugo Broos has revealed that the team is now focused on the 2026 World Cup after crashing out of the Nations Cup on Sunday.

The Bafana Bafana suffered a 2-1 defeat to Cameroon in Rabat to end their campaign in the second round.

Broos also denied suggestions that the team has regressed since qualifying for the World cup after they finished third at the 2023 Nations Cup in Ivory Coast.

He said: “We don’t go backwards – maybe in some games performances were not at the level of South Africa that everyone knows, but you can’t say that for today.

“Sometimes you need luck on your side and two years ago in the quarterfinal against Cape Verde Ronwen Williams made a big save, otherwise we could have lost that game.

“Today we didn’t have luck on our side. We are not going backwards but we do have to make a good evaluation of what happened here at this tournament as we look forward to the World Cup.”

South Africa finished second behind Egypt in the group stage after victories over Angola, and Zimbabwe.

They qualified for their first World Cup since 2010 after topping Group C with 18 points, one point above Nigeria.

The Bafana Bafana will take on Mexico on June 11 before battling South Korea and a European play-off winner in the group phase.

Cameroon will battle it out with hosts Morocco in the quarterfinals on Friday.
