There was excitement at Colchester Zoo after a British chimpanzee named Kora welcomed her first baby following 17 years at the zoo.

Zoo workers were delighted to discover that Kora had safely given birth to a healthy baby, marking a rare and special moment for the facility. The zoo has not recorded a chimpanzee birth since Talia was born in March 2009.

According to zookeepers, the baby’s father, Napoleon, has been staying close to Kora since the birth, showing strong interest in both mother and newborn.

The baby chimpanzee was born on January 17.

Kora, who was born at Colchester Zoo in November 1999 to her mother, Billy-Joe, is experiencing motherhood for the first time.

Napoleon only joined the zoo less than a year ago after being transferred from Bioparc Fuengirola in Spain in April.
