Anthony Taylor will take charge of Chelsea’s game against Manchester City on Sunday – despite awarding another questionable penalty last Saturday.

Taylor was demoted to the Championship after giving Newcastle a spot kick in their 2-2 draw against Wolves at Molineux last month. The Premier League’s Independent Key Match Incidents Panel reviewed the decision and deemed it to be incorrect.

Taylor was put in charge of the game between Preston and Coventry on Saturday as punishment for his blunder. The FIFA-listed referee was embroiled in controversy again after giving a soft penalty to Preston, who went on to win 3-2 at Deepdale.

Taylor is one of the Premier League’s most recognisable referees after taking charge of some of the biggest games in football. His CV includes the League Cup final, the Europa League final, the Championship play-off final and two FA Cup finals.

Yet Taylor was ordered to referee the game between Preston and Coventry after his mistake. Wolves boss Gary O’Neil joked about Taylor’s demotion to the Championship ahead of his team’s match against Sheffield United last Saturday.

He said: “Anthony Taylor’s doing the Championship game this weekend – that’s three referees who’ve been relegated on the back of refereeing us, so you need to be careful when you referee Wolves because you could end up getting relegated the following week!”

Ironically, there was another questionable refereeing decision made against Wolves in their 2-1 loss at Bramall Lane, as United got a last-minute penalty following a soft challenge. “It’s not a penalty,” said O’Neil. “I have spoken to the referee who says there is contact.”

Although Taylor has faced more criticism for giving Preston a penalty, Coventry boss Mark Robins didn’t complain about his performance after last Saturday’s game. Taylor pointed to the spot after Kyle McFadzean caught Preston’s Milutin Osmajic.

Robins said: “Fadz then ended up pulling him down… we’ve not done enough in the first half, and then we conceded a poor goal in the second half, which puts it on the backfoot had we not done that, I think we go and win the game.”
