BREAKING: Lagos Govt Seals Alaba International Market

The Lagos State Government has sealed the popular Alaba International Market, Ojo, Lagos, GISTSMATE MEDIA is reporting.

The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Lagos State, Tokunbo, disclosed the development in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, on Monday morning.

The commissioner said the early morning operation was carried out due to the market’s “poor waste disposal practices” and “failure to pay waste bills.”

“Alaba International Market, Ojo has been sealed up for poor waste disposal practices, failure to pay their waste bills and gross environmental sanitation offences,” Wahab wrote.

The Alaba International Market joins the infamous list of sealed markets that include Mile 12 International Market, Owode Onirin market, Oyingbo market, Alamatu market, Ladipo market, and Tejuosho market.

Meanwhile, on Sunday, the Lagos government sealed markets within Trade Fair Complex, located at Lagos-Badagry expressway, Ojo, over a series of environmental infractions, particularly improper waste disposal, burning of waste, which had raised concerns about public health and the well-being of people in the area.

The enforcement was carried out in partnership with Lagos Task Force on Environmental Sanitation and Special Offences and the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC).

The environment commissioner expressed the state government’s unalloyed commitment to maintaining a healthy and sustainable environment for all residents, noting that such enforcement measures were essential to safeguarding public health and ensuring a high quality of life for Lagosians.

“We cannot compromise on environmental standards. The closure of some markets within Trade Fair Complex is a necessary step to rectify the infractions that have persisted in the area. We are dedicated to restoring the environment and ensuring the well-being of residents,” he said.

Wahab stated that the enforcement action served as a clear message that environmental compliance was non-negotiable in Lagos State, adding that it reinforced the state government’s zero tolerance policy and commitment to fostering a sustainable and livable environment for all residents.
