BREAKING: Ex-UK Prime Minister, David Cameron Returns To Govt

Former UK Prime Minister David Cameron has returned to government.

This occurred as a result of a recent cabinet reshuffle. In this regard, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak appointed Cameron as the new Foreign Secretary, replacing James Cleverly. Cameron, who served as Prime Minister from 2010 to 2016, returned to the political scene after a seven-year hiatus.

Sunak initiated the reshuffle by removing Home Secretary Suella Braverman on Monday morning. Cameron’s return to the front line of politics comes amid international challenges, including the war in Ukraine and the crisis in the Middle East. On his X account, Cameron expressed his commitment to addressing these challenges, stating, “While I have been out of front-line politics for the last seven years, I hope that my experience – as Conservative Leader for eleven years and Prime Minister for six – will assist me in helping the Prime Minister to meet these vital challenges.”

Last month, Cameron made headlines by criticizing Sunak’s decision to scrap the HS2 high-speed rail link between Birmingham and Manchester, stating, “We are heading in the wrong direction.”

Additionally, Cameron has consistently advocated for the UK to maintain its commitment to allocating 0.7% of its gross national income to international aid, a stance that differs from Sunak’s abandonment of this pledge.

Sunak’s decision to appoint Cameron as Foreign Secretary is likely to receive support from moderates in the Conservative Party critical of Braverman’s hawkish stance on immigration, policing, and homelessness. However, it may also heighten tensions within the party, particularly among right-wing members who still harbor resentment against Cameron for his role in the failed campaign to remain in the European Union.
