What’s new in BBIH?  

The June 2026 update to the Bibliography of British and Irish History adds 3678 new publications. The new update includes books, journal articles, book chapters from edited collections and history theses covering all areas of British and Irish history, from 55 BCE to the present day. This now means that BBIH contains 684,192 records. 

The June 2026 update includes:  

History titles published between 2016-2026 

  • 3,333 new titles have been added

Local histories of Britain and Ireland 

3168 publications were added including: 

  • 245 publications relating to Scottish history
  • 209 titles about the history of Wales
  • 1,382 publications relating to the history of England
  • 292 publications focusing on Irish history, including 48 publications focusing on Northern Ireland

Global histories of the British and Irish worlds 

732 new records with the BBIH subject term ‘Imperial and Commonwealth’ were added including: 

  • 184 records discuss the histories of African nations 
  • 69 records refer to histories of the Middle East

Researching the General Strike (1926) in BBIH

2026 marks the 100th anniversary of the General Strike, which took place in the United Kingdom from 4-12 May 1926.  

The new BBIH reading list offers 191 books, articles, book chapters and theses published between 1926 and 2024. The reading list uses as its starting point the keyword General Strike (1926) in BBIH’s subject tree. This keyword is a subcategory of the top level subject categories Events and periods and Economic history. 

Our coverage in this area of historical research is ongoing, and further publications will be added in future updates of the Bibliography. 

South Asian and Indigenous peoples histories in BBIH 

Over the next few months there are international observances for South Asian Heritage Month (1-31 July 2026) and the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples (9 August 2026). You can use BBIH to research both these areas as it contains:  

  • Over 20,100 publications about the histories of South Asia and Asian people, including British and Irish Asians. The June 2026 update contains 188 new records related to these histories.  
  • 1,072 publications related to the histories of Indigenous and First Nations peoples. The June 2026 update contains 24 new publications. You can discover more about this area of research by exploring the online reading list focusing on indigenous histories

  

About the Bibliography of British and Irish History  

The Bibliography of British and Irish History (BBIH) is the largest and most comprehensive guide available to what’s been written about British and Irish history, from the early 1900s to the present day. 

It’s an essential resource for research and teaching, providing up-to-date information (and links) on over 680,000 history books, articles, chapters, edited collections and theses. New records are added in three annual updates. These records are searchable by a wide range of facets including: title, author, chronology, date and form of publication, historical topic and geographical region.  

The Bibliography is a research project of the UK’s Institute of Historical Research (IHR) and our publisher Brepols.
