Awoniyi

Taiwo Awoniyi has opened up on his emotional return to the scoresheet following Nottingham Forest’s 2–0 Premier League victory over Brentford at the City Ground.

The Nigerian striker came off the bench to score Forest’s second goal of the night, ending a wait of more than a year for a top-flight goal. It was a moment of relief and validation for the 28-year-old, who has endured a frustrating campaign marked by limited minutes and setbacks.

Awoniyi has struggled for regular playing time this season, but he insists his belief in himself has never wavered.

“For me, I’ve always believed this is where I want to be,” Awoniyi told BBC Radio Nottingham. “I’ve always believed I’m a Premier League player, no matter what is going on around me. That’s my focus.”

The striker credited Forest manager Sean Dyche for restoring his confidence and bringing him back into contention.

“Unfortunately, with what I’ve been through over the last one-and-a-half years, I’ve not been playing a lot,” he said. “The coach came in and brought me back, which is something I’m happy about. Getting the goal is something I’m really pleased with.”

Awoniyi’s struggles stem in part from a terrifying injury suffered last May during Forest’s 2–2 draw with Leicester City, when he ruptured his intestine after colliding with a goalpost. The forward was placed in an induced coma and underwent two surgeries, a period he describes as the toughest of his career.

Throughout that ordeal, Awoniyi says his faith sustained him.

“I’ve always believed in God, and I’ve always believed in myself,” he said. “The only thing that has kept me going is the man up there. He is the greatest and holds the key to everything.”

His goal against Brentford may mark the start of a long-awaited resurgence.
