Attorney General warns NDC against early succession politics

Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dr Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, has cautioned members of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) against engaging in early debates about who should lead the party into the 2028 general elections, describing the discussions as a needless distraction from national development.

Speaking in an interview on Bolgatanga-based A1 Radio, the Bolga East Member of Parliament said the growing interest in succession politics risks shifting attention away from the real work of governing and delivering on promises made to Ghanaians.

Dr Ayine noted that President John Dramani Mahama has only completed the first year of his current term and requires a stable political environment to pursue the administration’s economic reset and social interventions.

He said premature flagbearership conversations could weaken focus and create unnecessary tension within the party.

According to him, this is a period that demands commitment to policy execution rather than internal manoeuvring.

He stressed that his personal priority remains serving the public through his role at the Ministry of Justice, not positioning himself or others for future political contests.

“I am more interested in working to be a good Attorney General and serving the people of this country. I am not very keen on who succeeds the President because I believe it is a distraction,” he said.

Dr Ayine also reminded party faithful that the NDC has a clearly defined internal electoral structure that must be followed before any flagbearership contest can take place.

He explained that branch, constituency, regional and national executive elections come first, forming the foundation of the party’s democratic processes.

Beyond party politics, he argued that ordinary Ghanaians are far more concerned about jobs, economic stability and welfare-focused programmes than internal power struggles.

With key reforms expected in the coming years, he urged government appointees and party supporters to channel their energy into improving lives rather than speculating about succession.
