Anti-Hamas Militia Leader Yasser Abu Shabab Killed in Gaza

Yasser Abu Shabab, the leader of an Israeli-backed anti-Hamas militia operating in southern Gaza, has been confirmed dead after a violent incident in Rafah.

According to the group, Abu Shabab was killed while attempting to mediate and de-escalate a dispute between members of a local family in a public square.

Two Israeli sources disclosed that after he was injured, Israel attempted to evacuate Abu Shabab to a hospital in southern Israel, but he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

Before his death, Abu Shabab, who was in his early 30s, led one of the most influential Israeli-supported militias in Gaza. His growing influence across parts of southern Gaza had been seen as a key component of Israel’s long-term plan to challenge Hamas’ authority and establish alternative local leadership in the enclave.

Israel reportedly intended to rely on Abu Shabab and his organization, known as the “Popular Forces,” to help secure and manage future reconstruction projects in areas of Gaza under Israeli control as part of the next phase of the ceasefire arrangement.

In the final months of the conflict, Abu Shabab and his fighters also played a role in regulating humanitarian aid movement coming through the Kerem Shalom crossing.

His cooperation with Israel made him a controversial figure within Gaza.
Hamas publicly labeled him a “traitor,” warning that his fate represented what awaited anyone who they claim collaborates with Israel. However, Hamas has not taken responsibility for the attack leading to his death.
