Former world heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua has returned to the United Kingdom following a fatal road accident in Nigeria that claimed the lives of two members of his inner team.

The Nigeria-born British boxer was involved in the crash last Monday when the vehicle conveying him collided with a stationary truck on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway. The incident resulted in the deaths of his personal trainer, Kevin Latif Ayodele, and his long-time strength and conditioning coach, Sina Ghami.

Joshua escaped the accident with minor injuries and was rushed to a hospital in Lagos, where he received medical attention. He was later discharged on New Year’s Eve before travelling back to the UK.

Funeral prayers for the deceased, Ghami and Ayodele, are scheduled to take place on Sunday at a mosque in London, with family members, friends and members of the boxing community expected to attend.

Meanwhile, police authorities have confirmed that the driver of the vehicle, identified as Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving and operating a vehicle without a valid driver’s licence.
