Amazon Announces $25B Commitment Toward Mississippi Data Center Operations And Addresses Water Usage

Amazon has shared its plans for its Mississippi data center operations.

According to a press release, the big tech company said it intends to invest $25 billion in the state, which will also support the creation of 2,000 high-skilled roles in its data centers. These facilities support advanced cloud computing that powers health care systems and supports farmers, among other areas. In Madison County, where Amazon plans to invest an additional $11 billion, more than 75 Mississippi companies are employing construction workers, electricians, and operational staff.

“Amazon isn’t just reinvesting in Mississippi — the company is once again betting on our people. $25 billion in two years is providing Mississippians with high-tech, high-paying opportunities, strengthening our communities, and showing the world that our state is open for business,” Governor Tate Reeves said in the news release. “This is what transformational economic growth looks like, and it’s happening right here, right now. This is Mississippi’s time.”

Jeff Cox, president of Birdsong Construction, a second-generation company based in Clinton, MI, commented:

“It’s brought in more work to this area than we’ve ever seen. We’re seeing transformational progress that’s creating careers and building Mississippi’s future.”

The $25 billion commitment will also support Entergy Mississippi’s Superpower Mississippi initiative, which seeks to make improvements valued at $300 million for the state’s energy grid at no cost to customers. This will lead to an energy grid that is 50% more reliable and has 50% less outages, according to the release.

Amazon’s partnership with Entergy Mississippi will also ensure it is responsible for paying all costs tied to its new data centers, including upgrades.

Separately, Amazon is also investing in five renewable energy projects in the state that will generate new carbon-free energy through solar and wind farms, powering 152,000 homes, notes the release.

Across the board, Amazon projects its investments in the state will lead to new revenue totaling hundreds of millions, which will be pumped into the state economy.

“Amazon has been an incredible partner in Mississippi’s economic development,” said Joey Deason, president and CEO of Madison County Economic Development Authority. “At the end of the day, this collaboration translates to increased paychecks, expanded small business opportunities, and a stronger tax base for generations.”

Amazon also addressed concerns about water usage in its data centers. It claims its data centers in Mississippi do not rely on water-based cooling, but instead on outside air 91% of the year. Water-based cooling is used during the hottest times of the year, it said, per the release.

Amazon will also support a water replenishment project in partnership with Arable, a company leveraging cutting-edge technology to advance sustainable agriculture. The project centers on the Mississippi River Alluvial Aquifer, which will lower groundwater withdrawals for farmers by 150 million gallons each year, notes the release. This amount of water saved could supply more than 1,600 households in the state for an entire year.

David Zapolsky, Amazon’s chief global affairs and legal officer, views Amazon’s investments as one that will serve the state for generations.
