Alternativee Routes from Nairobi to Nakuru Ahead of Raila Odinga’s Funeral In Kisumu

As Kenyans prepare to pay their respects to the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, traffic on the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway is expected to surge.

Travelers should consider alternative routes to avoid congestion and ensure timely arrivals in Nakuru.

Here are some recommended options:

  • Nairobi → Rironi → Flyover (Magumu) → Njabini → Ol Kalou → Dundori → Lanet.
  • Nairobi → Rironi → Naivasha → Engineer → Ol Kalou → Dundori → Lanet.
  • Nairobi → Thika → Magumu → Ol Kalou → Dundori → Lanet.
  • Nairobi → Ngong Town → Kibiko → Suswa → reconnecting to Nakuru. However, drivers should be cautious of the gravel stretch along Suswa.
  • Nairobi → Rironi → Naivasha → Gilgil → Ol Kalou → Dundori → Lanet.

Traffic congestion is expected as people travel to Kisumu to attend the burial of the late Raila Odinga. Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead, leave early

Traffic on Nairobi–Nakuru Highway

The Nairobi–Nakuru Highway is well-known for its frequent and heavy traffic congestion, especially during peak hours and holiday seasons.

Traffic jams are usually caused by too many vehicles on the road, drivers not following lanes properly, and bottlenecks at busy spots like Naivasha, Gilgil, and Kikuyu.

Traffic delays are further compounded by roadworks, accidents, and the mix of long-distance trucks with commuter traffic.

These conditions make travel unpredictable, often stretching what should be a 2–3 hour journey into much longer trips.

Efforts are ongoing to ease the congestion, including the construction of interchanges like Gitaru and regular traffic management by authorities, but motorists are consistently advised to plan ahead, observe lane discipline, and use alternative routes when possible.

Easing Traffic Congestion

Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo announced in July 2025 that the construction of the Gitaru Interchange is part of a broader plan for decongestion.

The project, undertaken by the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA), aims to address persistent congestion at one of the most heavily trafficked junctions along the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway.

“Once complete, the interchange will streamline traffic flow, improve access to and from Kikuyu town, and strengthen connectivity between Nairobi and Kenya’s central and western regions,” Raymond said.

For years, bottlenecks along the highway have slowed movement, disrupted daily commutes, and strained local transport networks.

“The result will be more efficient travel, reduced travel time for motorists, and improved mobility for residents and businesses that rely on this vital corridor,” he said.
