Africa’s Best Referee, Omar Artan Ruled Out of 2026 World Cup After US Entry Denial

Somalian referee Omar Artan will not officiate at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after being denied entry into the United States, FIFA has confirmed.

In a statement released on Monday, the world football governing body said Artan would be unable to participate in training programs or officiate at the tournament following a decision by US immigration authorities.

“FIFA is not involved in host country immigration processes, including visa adjudications, and has been informed by authorities that Mr Artan’s status will not be changed at present,” FIFA stated.

The organization further emphasized that immigration and visa decisions remain the responsibility of the host nation, which has the final authority on who is granted entry into the country.

Artan, who has been on FIFA’s international refereeing list since 2018, was reportedly denied entry despite holding a valid US visa. His exclusion means he will miss the opportunity to officiate at football’s biggest tournament, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico in 2026.

The experienced official has built a strong reputation across African football, having officiated matches at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). He has also earned recognition from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) as one of the continent’s top referees in recent years.

The development has sparked discussions about the impact of immigration policies on international sporting events, particularly as the United States prepares to host thousands of athletes, officials, and support personnel during the 2026 World Cup.
