The Ghana Police Service has announced a national uniform policy, prohibiting any clothing that resembles that of state security agencies.

This initiative is intended to prevent impersonation and to clarify public identity.

The Director-General of Private Security Organisations, in a public notice, outlines only four approved uniform combinations that all private security personnel and their staff must now follow throughout Ghana.

According to the notice, which was released under Regulation 12 of the Police Service (Private Security Organizations) Regulations, 1992 (LI.1571), the authorized uniforms include: a “White Long/Short Sleeve Shirt paired with Ash Khaki Trousers featuring white stripes on both sides”; a “Cream Long/Short Sleeve Shirt with Brown Khaki Trousers that have Cream stripes on both sides”; and a “Mauve Long/Short Sleeve Shirt combined with Maroon Trousers that include Mauve stripes on both sides.”

Additionally, a fourth specialised uniform, a “Yellow shirt with Ash/Grey Reflectors on the front and back, worn with Brown Khaki trousers”, is designated exclusively for the Mines and Oil fields.

The directive clearly prohibits any improvisation, stating firmly that “any other uniform, color combination, design, or appearance not mentioned above that resembles the uniforms of any state security agency is considered unauthorised”.

This action seems aimed at reducing public confusion and preventing private security personnel from being mistaken for police or military officers, a concern that has persisted across various sectors.

The notice establishes a dual compliance obligation. It mandates that “all private security operators must strictly adhere to the approved uniform specifications outlined above,” while also directing that “in-house security personnel should refrain from wearing uniforms that bear any resemblance to those of state security agencies.”

The regulator cautioned that “offenders will be subject to penalties as prescribed by law,” although the specific consequences were not detailed in the notice.
