OpenAI, the artificial intelligence company behind ChatGPT, where Nigerian billionaire Adebayo Ogunlesi serves as a director, has selected the University of Lagos (UNILAG) as the home of its first AI academy in Africa. The move underscores OpenAI’s effort to expand its physical presence globally including plans for AI data centers across multiple continents.

The announcement came during UNILAG’s 2025 International Week, themed “Equitable Partnerships and the Future of AI in Africa.” The event attracted academics, innovators, government officials, and industry leaders from around the world to discuss how international collaboration can help advance technology access and research on the continent.

Academy highlights technology meeting human needs

Emmanuel Lubanzadio, OpenAI’s Africa lead, said the academy will be the first of its kind in Africa, citing UNILAG’s growing reputation in artificial intelligence as a key factor in the decision, and highlighting the importance of equitable research partnerships.

“AI can provide opportunities for everyone, and OpenAI is committed to ensuring access is broad,” Lubanzadio said. “We are excited to work with an institution focused on using technology to meet real human needs. The OpenAI Academy will support African talent and help innovation reach beyond a few centers of power.”

UNILAG’s selection reflects its emerging profile as a hub for innovation, research, and global collaboration. The announcement drew applause from students, academics, and tech innovators, signaling Nigeria’s growing role in AI education and research on the continent.

OpenAI hits $300 billion valuation

Since Ogunlesi joined OpenAI’s board in January, it has accelerated its expansion. OpenAI has raised tens of billions of dollars, acquired startups and signed one of the largest cloud computing contracts thus committing $300 billion over five years to Oracle for computing power.

OpenAI agreed to buy Statsig, a startup that focuses on real-time testing and data analysis, in an all-stock deal worth $1.1 billion in September. The purchase will give ChatGPT more features and help it work with new apps for people and businesses all over the world.

Earlier in March, OpenAI raised $40 billion, bringing its valuation to $300 billion. The funds are allocated to research, computing infrastructure, and product development, supporting the company’s work on artificial general intelligence capable of performing tasks done by humans.

Ogunlesi eyes Nigeria ports, aviation

Beyond AI, Ogunlesi, founder and chairman of Global Infrastructure Partners, is exploring investments in Nigeria’s ports and aviation sectors. Following a meeting with President Bola Tinubu in Abuja, Ogunlesi said his team is reviewing opportunities in energy, infrastructure, and aviation, signaling a broader commitment to building businesses at home.
