The Abia State Government, hosts the Abia first southeast shooting seminar and championship, as part of the governor’s promises to take sports to another level in the state.

The seminar which began on the 25th of January, features athletes across the southeast with two categories, under 15 male and female and Adult male and female categories.

Speaking at the closing ceremony of the seminar and kick off of the championship, Comrade Obioma George, Director of Sports, Abia State, expressed optimism about the state’s sports future, attributing the progress to Governor Dr. Alex Otti’s unwavering support.

“What I’ve seen here today is one of the ABIA state governor’s promises to support the number of sports we have in the state, today, shooting is now part of the sports Abia will be reckoned with,” he said .

The director highlighted the state’s focus on developing young talents, saying, “We are catching them young, so that we can dominate shooting.

In the last national youth games, Abia won 47 medals in shooting, and Comrade George believes that with the right equipment and support, the state can achieve greater success.

“On the side of the excellency, Dr. Alex Otti, we don’t have any challenge. When our paper goes in, it comes out meritoriously,” he said, praising the governor’s commitment to sports development.

The event featured the unveiling of state-of-the-art shooting equipment, imported from Germany, which is being used to train Abia athletes.

Comrade George outlined the state’s upcoming sporting events, including the Niger Delta Games and the National Para Games, where Abia athletes are expected to shine.

“We are looking forward to hosting the national shooting competition,” he said, emphasizing the state’s ambition to become a hub for sports excellence.

The introduction of shooting is part of Abia’s broader strategy to diversify its sports portfolio and improve its performance in national competitions.

The state’s efforts are already yielding results, with ABIA teams returning to the premier leagues in volleyball and handball.
