Cameroon’s 92-year-old President Paul Biya has been declared winner of the country’s disputed presidential election, extending his rule to an eighth consecutive term.

The Constitutional Council announced on Monday that Biya secured 53.7% of the vote, defeating his main challenger, Issa Tchiroma Bakary, who scored 35.2%.

Biya, who has ruled since 1982, is the world’s oldest serving head of state and will now remain in office until 2032. He further extends his 43-year hold on power.

Bakary rejected the results even before the final declaration, claiming victory and insisting that the official outcome was “tainted” and “not reflective of the people’s will.”

The announcement has sparked tension in parts of the country. Streets in Bamenda, a key opposition stronghold, were deserted on Monday amid fears of unrest.

In the commercial hub of Douala, at least four people were killed in clashes between protesters and security forces over the weekend.

Opposition supporters have defied a government ban on protests, accusing the ruling party of “stealing victory” and undermining democracy.
