2027: I’ll Consult Before Deciding on Presidential Race — Jonathan

Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has said he will consult widely before making any decision on whether to contest the 2027 presidential election.

Jonathan made the statement on Thursday while receiving groups of young supporters at his office in Abuja, where they urged him to return to the presidential race.

Responding to the appeals, the former president said contesting for Nigeria’s highest office is a serious responsibility that cannot be approached casually.

> “You are asking me to come and contest the next election. Presidential race is not a computer game. But I’ve heard you and I’ll consult widely,” he said.

Jonathan stressed that he could not make such a decision impulsively, adding that further consultations would guide his next political step.

> “I cannot just wake up and say I want to be the president of Nigeria again. But I am telling you that I will consult,” he added.

He also challenged Nigerian youths to participate actively in the democratic process by obtaining their voter cards and taking part in elections.

According to Jonathan, many young Nigerians demand political change without fully engaging in the electoral system.

> “If I ask how many of you have your voter’s card now, probably 50 percent of you don’t have your voter’s card. And you’re asking me to go and contest the election. So you must participate in the electoral process,” he stated.

The former president further emphasized the need for peaceful and credible elections, noting that low voter turnout remains a major concern in Nigeria’s democracy.

Jonathan also called on the Independent National Electoral Commission to examine the reasons behind poor voter participation and address the issue ahead of future elections.
