2027 elections: NDC to pick new candidates after defections to APC

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has announced plans to conduct fresh party congresses to select replacement candidates in constituencies affected by the defection of some of its candidates to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The party said the move was aimed at sustaining its preparations for the 2027 general elections despite losing some of its candidates to the ruling party.

The NDC disclosed this in a statement issued on Tuesday by its National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director.

According to the party, the replacement process would be conducted in line with the provisions of the Electoral Act 2026 to ensure that credible and competent candidates emerge to contest in the affected constituencies.

The party also urged its members and supporters not to be discouraged by the defections, insisting that the development would not derail its political ambitions ahead of the forthcoming elections.

The NDC accused the APC of offering incentives to some of its candidates to persuade them to defect. However, it did not name the individuals involved or provide evidence to support the allegation.

Describing the departing candidates as lacking commitment to its ideals, the party maintained that their exit would not weaken its resolve to challenge the ruling party in the 2027 elections.

“These are the last kicks of a dying horse that has seen the handwriting on the wall of its imminent defeat,” the statement said.

The party reaffirmed its commitment to improving governance, strengthening national security and promoting economic prosperity across the country.

It also expressed confidence in its political agenda and its ability to make an impact in the 2027 general elections.

Declaring its optimism about the country’s future, the NDC said, “A New Nigeria is possible. We can do it!”

The party’s planned congresses are expected to pave the way for the selection of new candidates in the affected constituencies as it continues preparations for the next general elections.
