Did you know that Denmark is the least corrupt country while Somalia, Syria and South Sudan are the most apparently corrupt according to the Corruption Perception Index of 2022?

According to the Corruption Perception Index (CPI) in 2022, Denmark was the least corrupt country in the world, with Finland and New Zealand following behind.

The CPI is an index which ranks countries "by their perceived levels of public sector corruption, as determined by expert assessments and opinion surveys." The CPI generally defines corruption as an "abuse of entrusted power for private gain". The index is published annually by the non-governmental organisation Transparency International (TI) since 1995.

Points considered when calculating the perception of countries' levels of corruption include: bribery of public officials, kickbacks in public procurement, embezzlement of state funds, and how effective public sector anti-corruption efforts have proven to be.

A score of 0 indicates high perceptions of corruption and a score of 100 indicates that no corruption is perceived in the respective country.

The 2022 CPI, published in January 2023, currently ranks 180 countries "on a scale from 100 (very clean) to 0 (highly corrupt)" based on the situation between 1 May 2021 and 30 April 2022.

Denmark, Finland, New Zealand, Norway, Singapore, and Sweden are perceived as the least corrupt nations in the world, ranking consistently high among international financial transparency, while the most apparently corrupt are Somalia (scoring 12), Syria and South Sudan (both scoring 13).

The Top 10 least corrupt countries worldwide in 2022, according to the CPI include:

1. Denmark 90

2. Finland 87

3. New Zealand 87

4. Norway 84

5. Singapore 83

6. Sweden 83

7. Switzerland 82

8. Netherlands 80
