2 Dead, 13 Injured in Ukraine After Intense Overnight Attack by Russia

Two people were killed and 13 others injured when Russia launched a heavy overnight attack on Ukraine using drones and missiles.

The strikes hit residential areas in several regions, including Kyiv, Zaporizhzhia, Odesa, and Kryvyi Rih.

Ukrainian officials said the assault started late on January 27 and continued into the early hours of January 28.

In the Kyiv region, two people died in Bilohorodka, a village near the capital. A high-rise apartment building caught fire after being hit.

Emergency teams worked through the night to put out flames and help residents.

In Zaporizhzhia, the attack damaged more than 100 apartments in residential blocks. Local reports said falling debris and fires were the main causes of the injuries there.

Odesa faced another night of drone strikes on the southern port city.

Three people were hurt in the latest wave, adding to losses from the previous night when three died.

Port facilities and homes sustained damage, and fires broke out in civilian areas.

Ukraine’s air force said Russia fired one ballistic missile and launched 146 drones during the operation.

The attacks focused on homes, energy sites, and other civilian places rather than military fronts.

Russia has targeted Black Sea ports like Odesa to disrupt grain exports and hit energy grids during the cold winter months.

Coldest Winter in Ukraine

Ukraine is facing a very hard winter in 2026.

Temperatures often drop to -15°C or lower, with snow and strong winds making it feel even colder.

Since early January 2026, large waves of drones and missiles have damaged power plants, substations, and power lines in cities such as Kyiv, Kharkiv, Odesa, Dnipro, and Zaporizhzhia.

These strikes leave millions without electricity for many hours — sometimes 12 to 20 hours a day or more.

In many places, the grid gives only about 60% of normal power.

Without power, heating stops, and homes in Ukraine get very cold, often only 9 to 12 °C.

People cannot cook or charge their phones easily.

Families wear many layers, use candles or small stoves, melt snow for water, and sleep under thick blankets, with the older people and children suffering the most.

Emergency tents offer heat, hot drinks, and charging stations.

Repair teams work non-stop, but new attacks keep coming almost every day or night.

Ukraine Responds to Russia Attacks

Ukraine denounced the continued strikes as deliberate efforts to pressure the country during ongoing negotiations.

Emergency teams worked through the night to manage widespread damage and restore basic services, while air‑defence units engaged incoming drones across multiple regions.

The attacks, occurring in parallel with diplomatic discussions, were described as attempts to undermine progress toward a settlement.

Ukraine maintained that it would keep defending its territory and stressed that meaningful talks cannot advance while civilian areas and critical infrastructure remain under assault.

Ukraine-Russia Peace Deal Progress

Russia, Ukraine, and the United States have been meeting in Abu Dhabi in an effort to find a path out of a war now approaching its fourth year.

Officials on all sides described the discussions as calm and constructive, with negotiators finally sitting together to talk through what an eventual end to the fighting might look like.

The sessions focused largely on the most difficult questions — how to secure long‑term safety for Ukraine and how to address the unresolved territorial disputes, especially in the Donbas region.

Ukrainian representatives said the talks offered rare direct engagement with Russia and included detailed conversations about how any agreement could be monitored and enforced.

However, the main problem still persists.

Russia continues to insist that Ukraine withdraw from parts of Donetsk and Luhansk that Russia claims but does not fully control, a position Ukraine firmly rejects as unacceptable and a violation of sovereignty.

More rounds of negotiations are planned, with all sides signaling that they are willing to keep talking.
