If you’ve been actively dating lately, chances are you’ve found yourself stuck in an endless rotation of eerily similar plans. Meet at a bar. Order a spicy margarita. Pretend you haven’t already answered “so what do you do?” three separate times that week. Maybe you throw in a coffee walk or a movie if someone’s feeling adventurous. These classic date formats are fine. (I’ve personally been on enough dimly lit dinner dates to qualify for a rewards program). But after a while, they all start to blur together into one long conversation about Hinge prompts and your favorite travel destinations.

This is probably why everyone I know is craving a little more whimsy right now. Searches for the term have surged more than 72 percent over the past year, according to Google Trends, as everyone collectively rebels against hyper-optimized routines, minimalist sameness, and the general monotony of adult life. Suddenly, people want experiences that feel playful again. You know, the ones that feel slightly unserious or even a little romantic in the old-fashioned sense of the word. And honestly, modern-day dating could use more of that energy.

The best dates aren’t usually the ones with the fanciest reservation or most expensive cocktails; the best dates are the ones that make you feel like you temporarily stepped outside your normal routine. They are the ones where you lose track of time, accidentally flirt a little harder, and leave with an actual memory instead of just another recap to send your group chat later. If you agree, are tired of the same predictable plans, and or you want to start going on more dates with a little more personality, read on for whimsy date ideas that make dating feel exciting again.

1. Take a ceramics class

There’s something inherently romantic (maybe even sensual) about making something with your hands, even if what you create ends up looking slightly questionable. A ceramics class gives you built-in conversation, lots of playful moments, and the kind of low-pressure environment that makes it easier to actually connect instead of conducting a formal interview over drinks. Plus, walking away with a lopsided little bowl you made together somehow feels weirdly charming.

2. Visit a pet store “just to look”

Walking into a pet store together is basically asking for instant whimsy. Soon enough, you’ll be debating which puppy has the best personality, laughing at aggressively tiny sweaters, and emotionally attaching yourself to a rabbit you absolutely cannot take home. It’s playful, lighthearted, and cuts through first-date awkwardness almost immediately because nobody can maintain emotional distance while looking at baby animals.

3. Go to the drive-in

Drive-in movies feel impossibly romantic in a way regular movie theaters just don’t anymore. There’s something about piling snacks into the car, throwing blankets in the backseat, and watching a movie under the night sky that makes the entire evening feel cinematic. Even if you barely pay attention to the film itself, the atmosphere adds that nostalgic, old-school vibe you’d find in a rom-com movie.

4. Do an at-home wine tasting

At-home wine tastings somehow feel both elevated and incredibly cozy. Pick up a few bottles in different styles, make a cheese board, light candles, and rate each one throughout the night. I did this with handwritten tasting cards, and it instantly lifted a random Friday night in my apartment into a scene from a Nancy Meyers movie.

5. Visit open houses

This could be incredibly romantic or mildly delusional, depending on your mood. Walking through open houses together taps into that playful fantasy energy—debating paint colors, judging strange kitchen layouts, pretending you’d absolutely host dinner parties there. Even if neither of you is remotely close to buying a home, it’s weirdly fun to imagine different versions of adulthood together for an afternoon.

6. Take a walking tour

A walking tour makes your own city feel new again. Let it be a ghost tour, architecture tour, food tour, historical tour—you name it! Anything that gets you moving and learning something together instantly makes the date more memorable than another loud bar conversation. There’s also less pressure because you’re focused on the experience itself instead of constant eye contact and small talk.

7. Go thrifting

Thrifting is an elite date activity because it gives you endless things to react to together. You can create silly outfit challenges, pick pieces for each other to try on, hunt for the weirdest item in the store, or genuinely discover something amazing. I once spent an entire date laughing over absolutely horrifying vintage artwork we found buried in a corner, and honestly, it was more fun than most expensive dinners I’ve been on.

8. Make breakfast for dinner

Breakfast-for-dinner dates have a very specific kind of cozy magic to them. I’m talking pancakes, crispy hash browns, eggs, bacon, and maybe a slightly chaotic attempt at homemade waffles at 7 p.m. It all feels comforting, low-pressure, and a little nostalgic in the best way. There’s also something undeniably charming about standing in the kitchen in your pajamas and making brunch recipes like it’s totally normal behavior for a Thursday night.

9. Play pickleball

Pickleball dates hit the sweet spot between active and social. In fact, in bigger cities, pickleball clubs have started turning the game into a full-on social outing. I recently took a date to CityPickle, which had chic courts, a fully stocked bar, great food, and plenty of lounge space for hanging out after a match. Fancy pickleball club nearby or not, it’s easy to lean into the whimsy of this activity. Bring iced coffees to your local courts in the morning, or turn it into a sunset activity followed by drinks or ice cream after.

10. Play card games outside

There’s something very old-school romantic about bringing a deck of cards to a park, rooftop, or beach and just hanging out for hours. It gives you something to do while still leaving room for conversation, flirting, and playful competitiveness. Plus, it instantly makes dates feel fun instead of overly serious. Add snacks and a bottle of wine, and the entire evening will feel like it’s straight out of a summer movie.

11. Head out for a bike ride

Bike rides have this very cinematic, carefree quality to them. Whether you’re riding along the water, stopping for iced coffee halfway through, or aimlessly exploring a neighborhood you’ve never really been through before, the whole thing feels spontaneous in a way modern dating often doesn’t. It also takes the pressure off constant conversation because the experience itself carries the date.12. Walk through the zoo

12. Go to the zoo

Zoo dates are deeply underrated. There’s built-in whimsy everywhere you look, from feeding giraffes to aggressively opinionated penguins to couples trying to decide which animal their date most resembles. It taps into that childlike curiosity most people don’t get to access very often anymore, and that kind of playful energy tends to make people open up naturally.

13. Make a themed dinner at home

Themed dinner nights turn a regular at-home date into an experience. One week, you’re recreating your favorite neighborhood pizzeria with homemade pizzas and red wine, the next you’re making childhood comfort foods or attempting a breezy coastal-inspired dinner with seafood, candles, and a suspiciously expensive baguette. The fun is really in committing to the bit—music, drinks, all of it. Suddenly, your apartment feels less like your apartment and more like somewhere you intentionally escaped to for the night.

14. Play arcade games

I don’t trust anyone who doesn’t thoroughly enjoy skee-ball, photo booths, or that feeling of excitement you get when tickets pour out of a machine. Sure, the prizes are sub-par, but that’s totally not the point. Arcade dates offer flirty competition and that not-so-serious vibe we all need now and then, which is exactly why I love them. The best part? You’re sure to learn a lot about your date during it—whether it’s an adorable childhood memory or whether or not they are a sore loser. Both are good to know!

15. Make ice cream sundaes

Head to the grocery store together to get all your favorite things: a few ice cream flavors, chocolate sauce, sprinkles, candy, cherries, and more. Then, head home, grab a couple of big bowls and tiny spoons (crucial, IMO!), and make ice cream sundaes. Throw on a new movie, or re-watch a nostalgic movie you both love, and enjoy your creation. The best part about this date is that you can repeat it since you’ll have all the supplies on hand. It’s an easy, cute, and low-pressure date you’ll keep on rotation.
