10 Dead, 7 Critically Injured in Multi-Vehicle Pile-Up on Jos-Bauchi Road

Tragedy struck in the early hours of Tuesday as at least 10 passengers lost their lives and seven others sustained critical injuries in a devastating road crash along the busy Jos–Bauchi Road in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State.

The ghastly accident, which occurred shortly after a military checkpoint at approximately 12:12 a.m., involved four vehicles—two trailers and two Ford Galaxy mini buses—in a deadly collision that claimed lives instantly.

Confirming the incident, Public Education Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Plateau State Command, Superintendent and Route Commander Peter Y. Longsan, said a total of 19 people were involved: 17 males and two females.

“Sadly, 10 adult males died on the spot,” Longsan stated, adding that the injured were rushed to General Hospital Miango, Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH), and Plateau State Specialist Hospital for urgent medical attention.

Eight of the bodies were deposited at the morgues of Plateau State Specialist Hospital and Bingham University Teaching Hospital, while two were released to officials of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) for immediate burial.

A joint rescue operation involving FRSC personnel, police, Ministry of Works officials, and local villagers swiftly responded to the scene to extricate victims and clear the wreckage.

Preliminary investigations by the FRSC point to excessive speed and reckless driving as the primary causes of the crash, with further probes ongoing to establish full details.

The sector command has renewed its appeal to motorists and commuters to avoid night journeys, desist from overspeeding and dangerous driving, and always place personal safety first.

This latest calamity comes barely 12 days after another fatal accident along the Zaria Road claimed the lives of nine students from the University of Jos, underscoring the persistent dangers on Nigeria’s highways during the festive season rush.

Road safety advocates have once again called for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations and improved infrastructure to curb the alarming rate of crashes on major routes like the Jos–Bauchi corridor.
