Zelenskyy Paralysed as 1,100 Russian Drones, Missiles Hit Civilian Infrastructure

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has reported severe conditions across multiple regions following intensified Russian strikes on critical infrastructure.

According to his shared X statement on January 11, he confirmed that attacks have disrupted electricity, heating, and water supplies during freezing winter temperatures.

Zelenskyy said energy workers and repair crews are operating continuously to restore essential services, describing their efforts as vital to maintaining civilian life.

“Energy workers and repair crews are working around the clock to restore electricity, heat, and water supply for people,” he said, adding that the scale of repairs reflects the pressure placed on communities by repeated strikes.

Zelenskyy on Scale and Nature of the Attacks

He detailed a significant escalation in the volume and variety of Russian weapons used over the course of one week.

Additionally, he stated that Russia launched almost 1,100 attack drones, more than 890 guided aerial bombs, and over 50 missiles.

These included ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and the Oreshnik medium-range ballistic missile.

According to the Ukrainian president, the strikes targeted energy infrastructure and residential buildings rather than military targets.

He said the attacks were timed to coincide with freezing weather conditions, describing the approach as intentional.

“They deliberately waited for freezing weather to make things worse for our people,” Zelenskyy said.

Civilian Impact and Allegations of Terror Tactics

The president characterised the strikes as deliberate actions against civilians, stating that the targets had “no military purpose whatsoever.”

He described the campaign as “deliberate, cynical Russian terror specifically against civilians,” emphasising the humanitarian impact of targeting power, heating, and water systems during winter.

The disruptions have affected daily life across several regions, increasing the burden on local authorities and emergency services while exposing civilians to harsh weather conditions.

Defense Efforts and National Resilience

Zelenskyy acknowledged the role of Ukraine’s defence units in responding to the attacks.

He praised mobile fire groups, air defence forces, and electronic warfare units for their continuous operations to intercept drones and missiles.

“I thank our mobile fire groups that defend Ukraine from these attacks day and night,” he said, extending his gratitude to all personnel involved in air defence and electronic warfare operations.

He also thanked civilians and workers supporting recovery efforts, noting that maintaining internal resilience remains critical.

In his statement, the president stressed that strengthening Ukraine’s defence capabilities and maintaining coordinated international support are essential as the attacks continue.

“Right now, our internal resilience and the work to strengthen our defence are especially important,” he said, adding that continued partnership is necessary “for the sake of peace.”
