The Controller of Corrections for the Zamfara State Command, Muhammad Juta, has emphasized vocational training and skills acquisition as essential pillars for rehabilitating inmates and facilitating their successful return to society.

During an official inspection tour of the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Gusau and the Nigerian Correctional Officers Wives Association (NICOWA) School, Controller Juta assessed ongoing facilities, engaged directly with correctional officers and inmates, and reviewed active rehabilitation and welfare initiatives.

Speaking to inmates at the Medium Security Custodial Centre, CC Juta highlighted that vocational and educational programs form the core of the Nigerian Correctional Service’s (NCoS) mission to reform, rehabilitate, and reintegrate offenders.

He urged inmates to actively participate in available skills acquisition opportunities, stressing that mastering trades and competencies would empower them to achieve self-reliance, contribute productively to their communities, and avoid recidivism after release.

The Controller praised the officers for their commitment and professionalism, encouraging them to maintain high standards of humane treatment and adherence to modern correctional principles.

At the NICOWA School in Gusau, CC Juta expressed approval of the conducive learning atmosphere and commended the teachers’ dedication to delivering quality education.

He recognized NICOWA’s valuable contributions to supporting the welfare of correctional officers’ families and advancing educational efforts within the command.

This routine inspection tour by the State Controller reinforces the Zamfara Command’s dedication to enhancing rehabilitation frameworks, elevating inmate welfare, and prioritizing education alongside practical skills development.

These elements are increasingly viewed as fundamental to building a progressive, rehabilitation-focused correctional system in Nigeria.

The Nigerian Correctional Service continues to align with national goals of transforming custodial facilities from mere places of confinement into centers of positive change and societal reintegration.
