Chelsea have confirmed Xabi Alonso as their new manager on a four-year deal starting July 1, and the Spaniard has already identified Turkish playmaker Arda Guler as his opening summer statement signing. Reports from Spain suggest Alonso made the 21-year-old Real Madrid midfielder a central demand during negotiations with the Stamford Bridge board.

Guler thrived under Alonso during the tactician’s brief spell in charge at the Bernabeu, starting regularly and accumulating six goals and 14 assists across 50 appearances this season. That working relationship has given Chelsea a significant edge over Arsenal, who are also monitoring the situation with a reported £80 million approach under consideration.

Real Madrid’s willingness to sell is the key variable. The club is not actively looking to move Guler on, but reports from Fichajes indicate they could enter negotiations if an offer close to £87 million lands on their desk. Alonso knows the player’s strengths better than any other incoming coach in European football, which is the clearest advantage Chelsea possess in what will be an expensive chase.

The prospect of a swap deal involving Enzo Fernandez heading in the other direction has also been floated, and it carries genuine logic given Fernandez’s rumoured interest in a return to Spain. Real Madrid have long tracked the Argentina international, and his market value would offset a significant portion of Guler’s asking price.

Guler himself is understood to be flattered by Chelsea’s attention but not yet committed to leaving. His position at Real Madrid improved dramatically under Alonso and his contract runs until 2030, meaning he holds considerable leverage. The player is reportedly aware that incoming manager Jose Mourinho may not grant him the same platform Alonso provided.

Chelsea’s lack of Champions League football next season is a complication. Guler has expressed his desire for European competition at the highest level, and that preference could yet steer him toward Arsenal, who have just won the Premier League title. The Gunners’ position in the race, therefore, cannot be dismissed.

Alonso also reportedly holds interest in Real Madrid defender Alvaro Carreras, who unlike Guler is understood to be open to following his former coach to London. The two signings combined would represent a statement of intent from a Chelsea board that has backed managerial appointments aggressively in recent years.

The transfer window has not yet officially opened, but the political groundwork is already being laid across multiple clubs. Chelsea’s incoming era under Alonso will be judged partly by how aggressively they can land the players he wants rather than inheriting those who were signed before his arrival.

Whether the £87 million price tag proves manageable for Chelsea depends heavily on player sales this summer. The Blues carry a bloated squad from their recent recruitment drive, and several departures will need to be structured before fresh record investments become viable.

Alonso’s ability to attract Guler could set the tone for Chelsea’s entire summer. If he can convince a player of Guler’s calibre to choose a club without continental football, it would demonstrate genuine pulling power from day one of his tenure.
