Chelsea’s incoming era under Alonso will be judged partly by how aggressively they can land the players he wants rather than inheriting those who were signed before his arrival.

Whether the £87 million price tag proves manageable for Chelsea depends heavily on player sales this summer. The Blues carry a bloated squad from their recent recruitment drive, and several departures will need to be structured before fresh record investments become viable.
