Woman Set Ablaze Over Alleged Blasphemy In Niger

Residents of Kasuwan-Garba town in Mariga Local Government Area (LGA) of Niger State lynched and set a woman ablaze on Saturday evening, over alleged blasphemous remarks against Prophet Muhammad.

The victim, identified as Amaye, a food vendor, reportedly made the alleged comments at her restaurant after a customer jokingly expressed interest in marrying her, citing the tradition of the Prophet.

A source who preferred anonymity told Daily Trust that Amaye was initially taken to the palace of the District Head of Kasuwan-Garba, who subsequently handed her over to security operatives for investigation.

However, a mob overwhelmed the security team and carried out the attack.

Confirming the incident, Chairman of Mariga LGA, Abbas Adamu Kasuwan-Garba, said, “Normalcy has now been restored in the town. We are working with security agencies to ensure that such an incident does not happen again” (August 31, 2025).

The Spokesperson for the Niger State Police Command, SP Wasiu Abiodun, stated, “On 30/8/2025 at about 2pm, report received indicated that one Amaye, a female of Kasuwan-Garba, Mariga LGA made some comments against the Islamic prophet.

“Unfortunately, it led to a mob attack and she was set ablaze before the reinforcement of the security teams. Meanwhile, efforts are being made to ensure that arrests are effected, investigated, and prosecuted”.

SP Abiodun added, “We urge all citizens to report matters of blasphemy to law enforcement and avoid taking the law into their own hands. Vigilante actions like this will not be tolerated” (August 31, 2025).
