Wolverhampton Wanderers have signed former England full-back Kieran Trippier on a free transfer, with negotiations also underway to re-sign striker Raul Jimenez.

Trippier departed Newcastle at the end of the season when his contract expired, and has put pen to paper on a two-year deal at Molineux.

The 35-year-old made 160 appearances for Newcastle following his arrival from Atletico Madrid in January 2022, establishing himself as one of the club’s key figures.

Trippier also earned 54 caps for England between 2017 and 2024, cementing his reputation as one of the country’s most experienced full-backs of his generation.

Head coach Rob Edwards was clear about why the club moved to bring the veteran defender to Molineux this summer.

“We know what we’ve lacked this year, and we know what we need next year – experience, leadership, resilient characters and strong characters,” said Edwards.

“That’s what we’re going to need in abundance, and Tripps ticks every box.”

Wolves are also in talks to bring back Jimenez, who was listed by Fulham among a group of players set to leave the Premier League club when his contract expires at the end of the month.

The 35-year-old Mexican striker scored 57 goals in 166 games during his previous spell at Molineux between 2018 and 2023, becoming a fan favourite.

His 40 Premier League goals for the club make him Wolves’ all-time top scorer in the English top flight, underlining the significance a return would carry.

Jimenez is currently on international duty with World Cup hosts Mexico, who open their tournament campaign against South Africa on Thursday.

The dual transfer activity signals Wolves’ intent to mount a serious push for an immediate return to the Premier League following last season’s relegation.

The club finished bottom of the Premier League last season and dropped into the Championship, making this summer’s recruitment drive critically important.

Bringing in leaders like Trippier and a proven goalscorer of Jimenez’s calibre would give Wolves a significant boost as they prepare for life in the second tier.
