Debuting to the public as a concept car in 1999, the Pontiac Aztek was developed as a versatile SUV with the Gen X buyer in mind. The Aztek hit the market in 2000 for the 2001 model year, competing in the crossover niche with SUVs like the Honda CR-V. General Motors hoped to sell around 75,000 of these SUVs each year, but by the end of 2002, with sales of just 27,793 units (a number which would hold as the crossover's end-of-year record), it was pretty clear that that wasn't going to happen.
