Why NFF U-turn on foreign coach for Super Eagles

The NFF initial plan was to appoint a foreign coach to replace the Portuguese Jose Peseiro, but their poor finances made sure they had to settle for a local man.

Today, former Ajax winger Finidi George was named new Super Eagles coach after he worked in an interim capacity last month.

“It had to do with finance (why a foreign coach not appointed),” explained Victor Ikpeba.

“We were also guided to look inwards as Nigerians want a Nigerian coach.

“We therefore have to support Finidi now so that Nigeria will be at the World Cup.”

Ikpeba said Finidi deserves his appointment.

“He deserves his job,” he declared on Monday Night Football on SuperSport TV

“It was a difficult job to do this appointment as there is a process, so credit to both the technical committee and the NFF Executive Committee for this decision.”
