Why Nairobi Governor Aspirant Opposes Sakaja’s Impeachment Despite Political Gain

Nairobi gubernatorial aspirant Irungu Nyakera has surprisingly defended the underfire Governor Johnson Sakaja, declaring on Monday that he does not support the ongoing impeachment push.

Nyakera, the Nairobi Patron of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), admitted that he stood to benefit politically if Sakaja was pushed out but insisted that democracy had to prevail.

The former Transport Principal Secretary, however, challenged Sakaja to shift from public relations to tangible service delivery, warning that his legacy would depend on results, not appearances.

“While I would naturally stand to benefit if Governor Sakaja were impeached, I do not support it. Nairobians freely chose him in 2022, and democracy demands that we respect that choice, even when it proves difficult. I urge Sakaja to drop the PR and theatrics and use his remaining two years to deliver on the promises he made,” Nyakera said.

Nyakera also sent a direct message to Nairobi residents, urging them to be more careful when choosing leaders in future elections.

“To Nairobians: let this be a lesson ahead of 2027, leadership is about proven ability, integrity, and accountability. Let’s choose better in 2027,” he added.

Why Nyakera Wants the Top City Job

At 43, Nyakera declared his bid for the Nairobi governorship, saying he could no longer watch the capital “punch below its weight.” He vowed to provide leadership that would unlock Nairobi’s full potential as Kenya’s economic hub.

“The leadership we have today has surrendered the city to cartels. They are running one of Africa’s biggest cities without a plan, and that is very dangerous. As a person who has fixed problems and streamlined elsewhere, I cannot sit back and watch Nairobi crumble under the weight of incompetent leaders. I want to fix this city, and the time is now,” he said.

Nyakera contested for the Murang’a gubernatorial position in 2022 on the Farmers Party ticket but lost to Irungu Kang’ata, who contested on UDA, then the major political movement in Mt. Kenya.

“I ran a good campaign, but the UDA wave at that time overshadowed my rising political star. My party, the Farmers Party, wasn’t that popular in the region. I have since learnt my lessons and I’m now positioning myself strategically as we head into the 2027 contest,” he explained.

If elected, Nyakera promised to tackle corruption at City Hall, fix Nairobi’s chaotic transport sector, and create jobs for the youth.

“We need a manager in Nairobi, not a politician whose only qualification is a birthmark or ability to entertain. I’ll put the right people in the right places and get the work done. I have managed banks and companies successfully, locally and internationally. The secret is to get competent people to work with, but you can only do that if you are also competent,” Nyakera said.
