The World Health Organisation (WHO) has issued its first global guidelines on the care of children and adolescents living with obesity, advocating a supportive, non-stigmatising approach that promotes healthy growth and long-term well-being.

The guidelines come amid rising global concerns, with an estimated 170 million children and adolescents aged five to 19 living with obesity in 2024, four times the rate recorded in 1990.

In a statement, the WHO said childhood obesity could have serious physical and mental health consequences, increasing the risk of non-communicable diseases, including type 2 diabetes and heart disease.

Affected children may also face stigma, discrimination and bullying, which could undermine their emotional well-being and quality of life.

The WHO said obesity care should prioritise healthy eating, regular physical activity, family involvement and support for children’s behavioural, emotional and mental health needs, rather than blame or judgement.

It said parents and caregivers had an important role in helping children develop healthy habits, while digital tools could support care under appropriate adult supervision.

The guidelines do not recommend weight-loss medicines or bariatric surgery for younger children, emphasising the need for age-appropriate approaches to obesity management.

The WHO said obesity care should go beyond weight reduction to ensure that children could grow well, remain active, enjoy good health and develop sustainable habits for life.

The guidance forms part of broader efforts to improve the prevention and management of childhood obesity and promote better health outcomes among younger populations.
