Weatherman Lists Regions Set to Receive Rainfall Over the Next Seven Days

The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has issued a forecast for the week of February 24 to March 2, 2026, revealing continued rainfall in several parts of the country. In a statement on February 24, the Kenya Met Department advised residents and travellers to stay alert and updated since some regions were expected to experience isolated heavy downpours that could affect daily activities and road safety.

“Rains are expected to continue over several parts of the country. Stay updated on the latest weather information through official KMD platforms, said the weatherman. 

Kenya Met Forecasts Rainfall Across Multiple Regions

According to the Kenya met update, isolated heavy rainfall events may occur in the Central Highlands, Lake Victoria Basin, Rift Valley, South-eastern Lowlands, Coast, Western, and North-western Kenya.

Hot conditions during the daytime (maximum) temperatures above 30°C are expected in the Coast, South-eastern Lowlands, North-eastern, and North-western Kenya.

Further, cool Nights during nighttime (minimum) temperatures below 10°C are expected in parts of the Central Highlands, Central Rift Valley, Western Kenya, and areas near Mt. Kilimanjaro.

Areas to Receive Rainfall Today

In an earlier update on February 23, the weatherman reported that widespread light to moderate rainfall was expected across several parts of the country over 24 hours from 0900hrs on Monday, February 23, to 0900hrs on Tuesday, February 24, 2026.

Rainfall was forecast for the Lake Victoria Basin, Western Kenya, Rift Valley, Central Highlands, including Nairobi, and the South-Eastern Lowlands.

“Widespread light to moderate rainfall is expected over: Lake Victoria Basin, Western Kenya, Rift Valley, Central Highlands, including Nairobi, South-Eastern Lowlands,” the statement noted.

Kenya Met advised residents in the affected regions to prepare for wet conditions and exercise caution, particularly in areas prone to flooding or poor drainage.

When the Long Rains Season Will Start and Breakdown of Rainfall Distribution

The Kenya Meteorological Department has released the March–April–May 2026 Long Rains Seasonal Climate Outlook following the 12th National Climate Outlook Forum held in Nairobi. The Kenya Met outlook indicates that several parts of the country are likely to experience near-average to below-average rainfall, with variability in the onset, distribution, and intensity of rainfall during the season.

“The outlook indicates that several parts of the country are likely to experience near-average to below-average rainfall, with variability in onset, distribution, and intensity,” Kenya Met statement partly confirmed.

The Kenya Met Department has advised the public and sectoral stakeholders to plan accordingly.

The advisory covers agriculture and food security, water resources, health, energy, transport and infrastructure, disaster risk management, and urban and community planning.

Near-average to below-average rainfall is forecast over the following areas;

  • Lake Victoria Basin
  • Highlands West of the Rift Valley
  • Highlands East of the Rift Valley (including Nairobi)
  • Rift Valley
  • North-western Kenya

The outlook indicates that some areas within these regions may experience isolated heavy rainfall events. These isolated events may raise the risk of localised flooding and landslides.
