We knew silencing Osimhen was key to beating Super Eagles – DR Congo star

Democratic Republic of Congo midfielder Noah Sadiki said he and his teammates believed they would have a strong chance of defeating the Super Eagles if they succeeded in keeping Victor Osimhen quiet.

DR Congo reached the Intercontinental playoffs for the 2026 FIFA World Cup after edging Nigeria 4-3 on penalties, following a 1-1 draw after regulation and extra time.

Osimhen, who played a decisive role in Nigeria’s 4-1 victory over Gabon, started the match but failed to have any significant impact before he was forced off with an injury at halftime.

His withdrawal left the Super Eagles blunt in attack, as they struggled to create any clear chances while the Congolese dominated the second half and extra time.

Speaking on Brila FM after the victory, Sadiki explained their tactical approach.

“We know Osimhen is a big player. Also, there are other top players in the Nigerian team, but we knew if we can keep Osimhen quiet we have a chance of winning the game.”

Osimhen has now missed another opportunity to feature at the FIFA World Cup, having also been absent from the 2022 edition.

The Galatasaray striker will next target the 2030 tournament, by which time he will be 31.

He is in contention for the 2025 African Player of the Year award, where he will battle Egypt’s Mohamed Salah and Morocco’s Achraf Hakimi.
