The delegation, acting on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, visited the Shagari family residence to express the nation’s sympathy and solidarity. In a heartfelt address, Vice President Shettima described Hajiya Sutura as a symbol of selflessness and compassion, highlighting her remarkable contributions to her community and the nation during her lifetime.

“Hajiya Sutura’s passing is a huge loss to Nigeria,” Senator Shettima stated. “She will be remembered for her life of compassionate and selfless service to her community and the nation at large.

We are here at the instance of His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to condole with the government and people of Sokoto State, His Eminence, the Sultan of Sokoto, and the immediate family of our late President.”

The Vice President led prayers for the repose of Hajiya Sutura’s soul, seeking Allah’s mercy and granting her Aljannah Firdaus (Paradise). He also extended condolences to the Sultanate and the people of Sokoto State, praying for strength and fortitude for the family and the nation to bear the loss.

The delegation’s visit included a series of solemn engagements, with photographs capturing moments of the Vice President and other dignitaries paying their respects.

The Shagari family, led by Capt. Bala Shagari, the eldest son and Sarkin Mafaran Shagari, expressed deep appreciation for the Federal Government’s gesture. The family had earlier announced Hajiya Sutura’s death, noting her significant role as the last surviving wife of the former President, who served as Nigeria’s leader from 1979 to 1983.

Among the notable figures present were government officials and traditional leaders, reflecting the national significance of the occasion. The visit underscored a moment of unity beyond politics, as the Vice President emphasized the shared bonds that transcend divisions in governance.

This condolence visit follows a pattern of high-level delegations led by Vice President Shettima, including a recent trip to Kaduna State to mourn the passing of the mother of the Minister of Environment, Mallam Balarabe Abbas Lawal. The consistent presence of senior officials highlights the administration’s commitment to supporting its members and citizens during times of grief.

As the nation mourns Hajiya Sutura Shehu Shagari, tributes continue to pour in, celebrating her legacy of service and compassion. Funeral arrangements and further commemorative events are expected to be announced by the Shagari family in the coming days.
