Video: João Pedro’s family heartbroken after Brazil’s World Cup squad exclusion

Chelsea forward João Pedro was left disappointed after missing out on selection for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with an emotional video showing his family gathered together in anticipation of hearing his name announced by Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti.

The viral clip captured relatives and close associates of the Brazilian striker watching the squad announcement live, hoping Pedro would make the final list for the tournament, only for his name not to be called.

Reports from Brazil claimed Ancelotti and officials of the Brazilian Football Confederation had prepared two separate squad lists ahead of the announcement — one including Pedro and another featuring Neymar.

According to the reports, Pedro was considered a backup option in case Neymar failed a late fitness assessment following concerns over calf discomfort during Santos’ recent match against Coritiba.

However, after confirmation that Neymar was fit enough for selection, Ancelotti opted to include the veteran forward instead.

Speaking on the difficult selection process, Ancelotti admitted Pedro deserved consideration after an impressive season in Europe.

“It was very difficult to choose these 26 players. The competition in this country is very, very high,” the Italian manager said.

“We’re very sorry about João Pedro, because with the season he had in Europe, he deserved to be on this list. But unfortunately, we chose another player.”

Pedro later reacted to the disappointment in a social media statement, saying he remained calm despite missing out on the opportunity.

“I tried to give my best at all times. Unfortunately, it wasn’t possible to fulfil this dream of representing my country in a World Cup,” he said.

The Chelsea attacker scored 20 goals and provided nine assists this season and had widely been tipped to make Brazil’s squad after multiple appearances for the national team over the last two years.
