Victor Boniface vs Ademola Lookman: Who is the Super Eagle who has flown highest?

Victor Boniface and Ademola Lookman have enjoyed stellar campaigns this season so much so they are primed to be nominated for the CAF Player of the Year for 2024 after fellow Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen went all the way last year.

Interestingly, a week from today both Boniface and Lookman will come face-to-face in the final of the UEFA Europa League in Dublin.

This match could well determine who of these Super Eagles has soared the highest this season.

Victor Boniface has posted a most impressive first season with Bayer 04 Leverkusen in the German Bundesliga, netting 13 times and creating nine goals to shoot the ‘Die Werkself’ to their first-ever Bundesliga title and dethrone 10-time consecutive champions Bayern Munich.

Asides the Bundesliga, Boniface was also instrumental to Leverkusen’s eventful progress to the Europa League final, scoring five times and providing an assist as the Bundesliga champions now see themselves only a game away from ruling Europe also.

In the German Cup (DFB Pokal), Boniface has also been in fine form, netting twice in three games to ensure Leverkusen are now in the cusp of a treble this season.

The 23-year-old striker’s 22-goal contributions in 22 Bundesliga appearances has been the key to him clinching the Rookie Award in the Bundesliga four times in the row, from August to December last year, before finishing it off with a place in the Bundesliga Team of the Season.

He is now in line to be named Bundesliga Rookie of the Season.

Ademola Lookman, on the other hand, has carved a niche for himself particularly with Nigerian fans after he finished as joint leading scorer in the Super Eagles at the 2023 AFCON in Cote d’Ivoire.

The former England youth international was Nigeria’s best attacker at the tournament being his first-ever, netting a joint-top three goals for the Super Eagles and being the main threat of the Super Eagles attack on the way to the final.

He scooped an MOTM award at African football biggest showpiece event as well as a runners-up medal in his first major tournament with Nigeria after he changed international allegiance from England.

It was a tournament that Boniface missed out on due to a groin injury that needed surgery and sidelined him for four months.

Fleet-footed forward Lookman has had another fantastic season in Bergamo after an outstanding debut to underline his consistency.

Despite having an inferior goals contribution of 20 to Boniface’s 30 throughout this season, Lookman is on the verge of winning a double this season after he helped his club to reach the Copa Italia final, where they will keep a date with the ‘Old Lady’ Juventus.

Like Boniface and Bayer Leverkusen, Lookman and Atalanta are all set the Europa League final.

The winning Super Eagles from this final will most certainly enjoy a better chance of taking the place of Osimhen as the best African player of 2024.
