Uruguay Name Ugarte In World Cup Squad As Suarez Misses Out

Manuel Ugarte has been included in Uruguay’s squad for the 2026 World Cup, while veteran striker Luis Suarez has been left out by coach Marcelo Bielsa.

The Manchester United midfielder is one of three Premier League players selected for the tournament, which is being held in North America.

Wolves defender Santiago Bueno and Tottenham midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur are the other two Premier League representatives in the 26-man squad.

Bielsa opted against including 39-year-old Suarez, the former Liverpool and Barcelona striker, despite the player recently leaving the door open for a return.

Suarez had said he would reverse his international retirement if required by the national side, having been absent for 20 months.

Darwin Nunez has been named in the squad despite a prolonged spell without game time for his club Al-Hilal in the Saudi Pro League.

Nunez has not featured for Al-Hilal since February after the club reshuffled its foreign-player registrations following the signing of former Ballon d’Or winner Karim Benzema.

Uruguay have been placed in Group H and will open their World Cup campaign against Saudi Arabia on 15 June.

They will then face Cape Verde and Spain in their remaining group stage fixtures.

The full squad includes goalkeeper Sergio Rochet, defenders Ronald Araujo and Jose Maria Gimenez, and midfielders Federico Valverde and Giorgian de Arrascaeta among its key figures.
