University of Ghana graduates 15,288 with 153 PhDs at February Congregation 

A total of 153 candidates graduated with Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees at the opening of the February 2026 Congregation of the University of Ghana (UG) on Tuesday. 

In all, 15,288 students who successfully completed their programmes of study are expected to be awarded degrees during the congregation. This figure comprises 4,197 master’s students, 10,543 undergraduates, and 395 diploma students. 

The February 2026 congregation ceremonies are dedicated to postgraduate and undergraduate students from four colleges of the University. 

These are the College of Basic and Applied Sciences, the College of Education, College of Health Sciences, and the College of Humanities. 

Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, said the institution had positioned itself as Ghana’s leading university and a leader in West Africa through deliberate investments in research, innovation, governance, infrastructure, and student experience. 

“Our work remains anchored in five strategic priorities: transformative student experience, impactful research, commitment to our faculty and staff, engagement and partnerships, and sustainable resource mobilisation and stewardship,” she said. 

Prof Appiah Amfo noted that those priorities continued to shape the University’s response to emerging global trends and ensured that it remained resilient, relevant, and forward-looking. 

She, however, acknowledged challenges confronting the University, particularly inadequate physical infrastructure such as lecture halls, office space for staff and faculty, and student residential facilities. 

The Vice-Chancellor stressed that persistent pressure on existing facilities continued to affect the University’s capacity to support quality teaching and learning, as well as its ability to attract and retain high-calibre faculty and staff. 

“In spite of these challenges, we continue to work towards expanding our academic and residential facilities. Work on the Ghana Universities Superannuation Scheme (UG) hostel project is progressing, alongside hostels being constructed by private developers,” she added. 

Prof Appiah Amfo urged the graduates to uphold the highest standards of excellence and to conduct themselves with truth, integrity, and a strong sense of responsibility. 

“In doing so, you will continue to make the University of Ghana proud. I wish you every success in your future endeavours,” she said.
