UK Police Investigate Suicide Of British-Born Nigerian Following Alleged Blackmail

The British authorities are currently examining the case of the late Alanis Ogundipe, who tragically took her own life after purportedly facing blackmail from her boyfriend, Ryan Leggetts.

Detective Inspector Jonny Dyer from Greater Manchester Police disclosed this information in response to a query by PUNCH Metro regarding the progress of the investigation last Friday.

Dyer, who is overseeing the case, confirmed ongoing communication with the Ogundipe family. He stated, “I acknowledge the receipt of your email as requested. I have been tasked with reevaluating this investigation, and I am in correspondence with Oladapo Ogundipe. The review process is still underway, and we will keep Oladapo Ogundipe and his family updated upon its completion.”

On May 29, the 26-year-old Alanis reportedly leapt in front of a moving train at a Manchester train station. The incident occurred after Leggetts allegedly gained unauthorized access to her phone, copied her documents, and threatened to expose her private information to the public.

Oladapo Ogundipe, Alanis’s father, who raised concerns about the circumstances surrounding his daughter’s death, stated that Leggetts also made financial demands from her.

He explained, “Ryan met my daughter in June 2022, and less than a month into the relationship, he expressed his desire to marry her and introduced her to his mother. As my company’s director, we planned to send her £100,000 for a specific investment in the UK.

“When Ryan became aware of this, he began requesting her bank statements on May 13 and raised his voice at her. After she refused to provide them, he waited until May 28, 2023, when he learned that her passport was required for the money transfer.

“That’s when he unlawfully accessed her phone on May 28, around 10 a.m., while she was asleep, and began using the information he had copied to blackmail her. He also forced her to apologize to him and used the apology to coerce her into agreeing in writing that she would repay the coerced debt she supposedly owed him.”

Oladapo added that since he did not approve of the relationship, Alanis had to contact her mother, Josephine, to inform her about her issues with Ryan.

He recounted, “Her mother drove to meet her in Manchester on the evening of May 28, where she overheard her daughter’s conversation with Ryan as he pressured her into accepting his terms. On May 29, Alanis expressed her fear of losing her social circle and reluctantly agreed to Ryan’s repayment conditions. Four hours later, she took her own life.”

Oladapo admitted that he had no knowledge of the events until after his daughter’s passing. He also revealed that it was only after the incident that Leggetts shared a series of details explaining how he had infiltrated her phone without a password.

However, the grieving father expressed his concern about the response from Greater Manchester Police after sharing this information with them.

He noted that his wife, who had witnessed the conversation, was not invited for questioning, and Leggetts was not apprehended. According to Oladapo, the police relied solely on Leggetts’ statement.

In a conversation with The PUNCH correspondent on Wednesday, Oladapo mentioned that Dyer had recently confirmed the receipt of the evidence provided by the family.

“Dyer has just confirmed the receipt of the evidence and our contact number, which we sent to him. We are awaiting the results of his review,” he stated.

“The British Transport Police also mentioned that they would review the incident logs associated with my daughter’s tragic death, along with the information that was recorded and passed on to Greater Manchester Police. We are eagerly awaiting the outcome of the review.”
