ABU DHABI: UAE blocks violating websites at an accelerated pace, with authorities shutting down 13,667 sites during the first quarter of 2026 as part of a nationwide digital enforcement campaign. The sharp increase reflects a nearly 400 percent rise compared to the same period last year.

The initiative, powered by artificial intelligence, forms part of the InstaBlock programme designed to detect and act on copyright violations in real time. Officials said UAE blocks violating websites through advanced monitoring systems that identify illegal streaming and unauthorised content distribution across digital platforms.

Since the launch of InstaBlock Lab in February 2025, a total of 47,667 websites have been blocked, highlighting the scale of enforcement. Authorities also intensified action during Ramadan, a period typically marked by increased digital consumption. Data shows blocked sites surged from just 62 in 2023 to 5,677 in 2026 during the holy month alone.

The Ministry of Economy and Tourism coordinated with key stakeholders, including telecommunications regulators and major media platforms, to ensure rapid response and effective enforcement. Officials emphasised that UAE blocks violating websites not only to protect intellectual property rights but also to support content creators and maintain fair market practices.

Beyond enforcement, the campaign also focuses on raising public awareness about accessing licensed content through legal channels. Authorities say this approach is essential to building a responsible digital culture while reducing piracy-related risks.

The initiative aligns with the broader “We the UAE 2031” vision, which aims to strengthen the country’s knowledge-based economy and enhance its global standing in digital innovation. Experts note that continued investment in AI-driven enforcement will be key to maintaining a secure and competitive digital ecosystem.
