Manchester United youngster Tyler Fletcher has been named in Scotland’s World Cup squad despite making only two senior substitute appearances totalling 17 minutes.

The Fletcher family had originally planned to attend the World Cup as fans, travelling around the United States to watch Scotland’s matches together.

That trip was meant to offer some respite after a difficult end to the season, with dad Darren’s Manchester United Under-18 side losing two major cup finals.

Tyler’s twin brother Jack, who plays for England’s youth teams, had also suffered a final defeat, meaning the family faced a summer of near misses.

Instead of watching from the stands alongside Darren and Jack, Tyler will now be part of Scotland manager Steve Clarke’s squad for the tournament.

The call-up draws comparisons to Manchester United’s Norman Whiteside, who was selected for Northern Ireland’s 1982 World Cup squad after just two senior appearances.

Clarke’s decision to select Fletcher reflects the professionalism and work ethic the teenager demonstrated during Scotland’s training camp last week.

Fletcher had initially been invited to the camp to get an indication of international football’s demands, but quickly made a hugely positive impression on Scotland’s coaches.

When Billy Gilmour suffered a first-half injury during Saturday’s pre-tournament friendly with Curacao, Clarke only held Fletcher back as an immediate replacement out of caution.

Fletcher’s performance when he came on at half-time was described as full of maturity, surprising none of the youth coaches who have worked with him at United.

Tyler was crowned United’s Under-21 player of the year this season, having started the campaign slightly behind twin brother Jack before emerging as the stronger prospect.

Jack had appeared against, and beaten, Tyler’s Scotland in an Under-19s European Championship qualifier in November, but it is Tyler who has since moved ahead.

Tyler’s debut came as a last-minute replacement for Kobbie Mainoo against Tottenham at Old Trafford on 7 February, making him the first academy player manager Michael Carrick gave a debut to.

Sixteen of his 17 senior minutes came on the final day of the Premier League season at Brighton, alongside Shea Lacey, confirming Carrick’s belief in his readiness.

Darren Fletcher, capped 80 times by Scotland but never a major tournament participant himself, is widely credited as a key influence in shaping his sons’ careers.

Those who have worked with Tyler consistently describe similar traits to his father, including, simply, “being really good lads.”

Fletcher senior was also keen to ensure his sons progressed beyond under-18 level before he took the Under-18 coaching role this season, specifically to avoid conflicts of interest.

Those close to Tyler describe him as a confident, driven young man who is equally very low maintenance, with “polite and conscientious” among the phrases used.

United coaches believe that alongside his stamina and athleticism, Fletcher’s ability on the ball, vision and game understanding will make him increasingly versatile in the years ahead.

“The best day of my life,” was how Fletcher described his first-team debut in February, a ranking that may now require some revision.
