Two men can still not be found after a canoe capsized on the Offin River near Achiase in the Atwima Mponua District on Thursday, September 25, 2025.

Local committee member, Daniel Adu, reported that the incident occurred around 8 a.m. when the inexperienced paddler lost control.

“All six fell into the river. We managed to rescue four, but we are still searching for the other two, who are adult males,” he noted.

NADMO officials participated in the rescue efforts before temporarily stopping operations until today, Friday, September 26, 2025, while traditional leaders conducted rituals at the riverbank.

Adu pointed out that this is not the first tragedy at this location, recalling a 2021 incident where four people drowned, and one body was never recovered.

Drowning remains one of Ghana’s most pressing issues on waterways.

It would be recalled that recently, six people were rescued, while several others went missing after a boat carrying displaced residents capsized on the White Volta near Dinie Tuonbo in the Savannah Region.

The victims were reportedly trying to cross the river to seek safety when the overloaded vessel lost balance and overturned midstream.

The exact number of passengers on board remains unknown, but authorities believe the boat exceeded its safe carrying capacity.

Emergency response teams from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), supported by personnel from the security services, have been swiftly deployed to the area.

A full-scale search and rescue operation is currently underway to locate any remaining survivors and recover the bodies of those missing.

Preliminary reports suggest that the passengers were fleeing flood-hit areas in search of refuge.
