England head coach Thomas Tuchel insists he will not compromise his team’s playing philosophy at the 2026 World Cup, regardless of the extreme heat in the host nation.

The German coach has consistently championed the physicality of English domestic football since taking charge in January 2025, and that belief shapes his entire approach to the tournament.

Tuchel’s 26-man squad selection reflected that philosophy, with a clear emphasis on powerful running and physical presence throughout the group.

“I’m just not ready to adapt into a different style of football because of circumstances that we cannot influence,” Tuchel said. “I think we would just give up our strengths.”

England open their Group L campaign against Croatia on Wednesday evening in Dallas, where temperatures are expected to exceed 30 degrees Celsius by kick-off.

The conditions will be somewhat eased by the fact that Dallas Stadium is one of several air-conditioned indoor venues being used at this World Cup, giving Tuchel confidence his side can perform.

Tuchel said playing indoors gives England a genuine opportunity to impose their style on Croatia from the very first match of the tournament.

Mandatory hydration breaks have been introduced across all matches, effectively splitting each half into two, and Tuchel acknowledged these intervals can “change the character of each half.”

He also noted the breaks offer coaches a chance to “change and reset” tactically while delivering “group messages” to their players on the pitch.

Tuchel visited the United States for last year’s Club World Cup with his FA support team, using that experience specifically to plan England’s World Cup preparation in detail.

“Research about the Club World Cup showed us that the style is pretty much the same, but maybe the repetition is less often,” Tuchel explained, adding that conditions influence volume and intensity but not the style of play significantly.

“They want to be active with the ball,” he said of his squad. “We have a young group. We have a courageous group. We have a brave group of players. So let’s go for it.”

Tuchel also confirmed that Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah was called up as a direct replacement for Tino Livramento, who withdrew from the squad with a calf injury.

“Tino was of course very disappointed and very sad, all of us were,” Tuchel said, describing Livramento’s withdrawal as “kind of a shock in training.”

“We called Trevoh Chalobah because we then free up Jarell Quansah as a full-back on both sides and Djed Spence can be a full-back on both sides,” Tuchel added.

Captain Harry Kane is set to earn his 115th England cap against Croatia, which would place him joint-third on the all-time appearances list alongside David Beckham.

Only Peter Shilton and Wayne Rooney have earned more caps for the Three Lions, making the milestone a significant moment in Kane’s international career.

“To reach the same number of caps [as Beckham] is a great thing for me,” Kane said. “Beckham was a big idol of mine growing up and obviously hoping and dreaming one day that I would be in the same England shirt as him.”

Kane arrives at the tournament in formidable form, having scored 61 goals in 51 club appearances for Bayern Munich last season, winning the German league and cup double.

“Some of the players like [Cristiano] Ronaldo, [Lionel] Messi and Modric, being able to do it for 20-plus years is what truly separates the good players from the great players,” Kane said.
