Tragedy as house fire leaves one dead after dozens of firefighters battle blaze – with cause probed by investigators

COPS are investigating following a fatal house fire in South London in which one person died yesterday.

The Met Police and London Fire Brigade are probing the blaze which occurred on Chelsham Road, South Croydon, just before lunchtime on Saturday.

Four fire engines were dispatched to the scene following reports of smoke billowing from the property.

Neighbours, who noticed the smoke, quickly raised the alarm, leading to an urgent response from emergency services.

Despite the best efforts of firefighters and paramedics, one person was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

The fire, which left the building with blown-out windows, has resulted in a crime scene being established at the property.

Chelsham Road remains closed in both directions as investigators from both the LFB and the Metropolitan Police work to determine the cause of the blaze and the circumstances surrounding the tragic death.

A spokesperson for the London Fire Brigade said: “Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters were called to a fire at a house on Chelsham Road in South Croydon.

“Part of the ground floor was damaged by the fire. A person was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

“The Brigade was called at 1156 and the incident was over for firefighters at 1301.

“The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Brigade and the Metropolitan Police Service.”
