The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has voiced concern over the recent surge in fuel prices across the country, warning that it could push the cost of petrol to as high as ₦5,000/litre.

In a recent interview, NLC spokesperson Benson Upah disclosed that the union is preparing to take new action in response to the federal government’s decision.

He mentioned that the NLC will convene a meeting with its leadership to discuss potential steps, which may include protests or other forms of demonstration.

“We are planning to hold a meeting with the relevant organs of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC). Those bodies will make the necessary decisions. We will act in the best interests of our members and, potentially, the country,” he stated.

Ex-President of NBA urges Tinubu to relinquish the position of Minister of Petroleum

Dr Olisa Agbakoba, a prominent Senior Advocate of Nigeria and former President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), while addressing Nigeria’s ongoing challenges, including rising fuel prices, the pressing need for judicial reforms, and the contentious issue of creating new states, called for President’s Tinubu’s resignation from the office of the Minister of Petroleum Resources.

In his words, “The President shouldn’t be involved in petroleum. It gives the wrong impression that President Tinubu is the Minister of Petroleum Resources. Why not the Minister of Health? It’s not only about President Tinubu. Why does the Nigerian president always hold the petroleum portfolio? It is not necessary,”

The honourable SAN claimed that there was a critical issue in the petroleum industry. He said most Nigerians were terrified of living in Nigeria due to the many hardships implemented by the government. He urged Tinubu to relinquish the position of Minister of Petroleum as it was redundant to his portfolio.

House of Reps Allegedly Proposes Bills to Hinder Civil Rights

The Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr Ola Olukoyede, announced yesterday that the agency had recovered $180,300 for two Canadian victims of a romance scam.

He also revealed that the EFCC tracked and intercepted 53 stolen vehicles from Canada that had been shipped to Nigeria. Nine of these vehicles were seized aboard a vessel at Tin Can Island Port in Lagos, thanks to a joint operation with the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), while the other vehicles were tracked to various car stands in the country.

The chairman stressed that since financial crime is borderless, there would be no hiding place for perpetrators.

Nigerians to remain in darkness as petrol tanks remain at depots

The ongoing petrol shortage in the country is expected to worsen as trucks remain stranded at depots, despite the Federal Government’s assurances of widespread availability of fuel by the weekend.

Sources reveal that some Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) vessels have arrived at the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) depots in Apapa and Port Harcourt. Still, independent marketers have yet to begin loading the product.

As a result, the shortage has persisted, with over 2,000 petrol tankers still waiting to lift products at various NNPC depots.

Mustapha Zarma, the National Operations Controller of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN), confirmed that loading has not yet commenced, warning that fuel queues could extend until Monday.
