Former President Olusegun Obasanjo recently reflected on his tenure, asserting that his administration significantly improved Nigeria’s economic situation. Speaking at the Safe Online Youth Fellowship Bootcamp organised by NerdzFactory Company and supported by Meta at the Youth Development Centre, Obasanjo shared insights into his achievements and the importance of national development.

According to a report by The Sun Nigeria, Obasanjo highlighted his economic accomplishments during his presidency. He explained, “When I came in as elected president, I wanted to get debt relief because we were spending $3.5 billion every year servicing debt, and the quantum of the debt was not going down. Today, I can say that I made Nigeria better than I found it from an economic perspective.”

In his words: “Today, I can say that I made Nigeria better than I found it”.

Obasanjo reflected on the state of Nigeria’s finances when he assumed office. “I found $3.7 billion in reserves, and we were spending almost all of that to service our debt. When I left office, we had achieved debt relief, reducing our debt to $3.6 billion while building up reserves to over $50 billion. I also facilitated an excess crude account worth over $25 billion,” he recalled. This transformation underlines his assertion that he left Nigeria in a better economic state.

Further emphasising the importance of collective efforts in national development, Obasanjo said, “National development is a collective responsibility, and education is very important as an instrument that you can use to contribute optimally to national development.” He urged the youth to recognise the critical role education plays in shaping the future of the nation

In summary, Obasanjo’s tenure as president saw significant economic improvements, including substantial debt reduction and increased national reserves. His statement, “Today, I can say that I made Nigeria better than I found it,” encapsulates the pride he feels in his contributions to Nigeria’s progress. His remarks at the Safe Online Youth Fellowship Bootcamp serve as a reminder of the power of education and collective responsibility in achieving national development..……See More
