Tobi Bakre Opens Up on Acting Journey, Reveals Backup Plan

Nollywood actor Tobi Bakre is offering fresh insight into his acting journey, revealing both the emotional depth he brings to his roles and the backup plan he once had in mind before fully committing to the screen.

In a recent interview with BBC News Pidgin, Bakre spoke about his role in Behind the Scenes, explaining that some of the film’s most powerful moments only revealed their true weight while filming. He noted that certain scenes became deeply personal, especially those centred on family and responsibility. Drawing from real-life reflections, he described how imagining a situation where children could lose the comfort and stability their parents worked hard to build made the performance feel strikingly real.

According to the actor, those emotionally charged moments required more than just technical skill; they demanded genuine connection. He explained that stepping into such roles often means confronting “what if” scenarios that mirror real-life fears, particularly when it comes to protecting loved ones and preserving a certain standard of living.

Bakre also addressed the contrast between his on-screen characters and his real-life personality. While audiences often see him take on intense or complex roles, he emphasised that many of those portrayals are far removed from who he is off-camera. For him, that transformation is the essence of acting,fully immersing himself in a character while maintaining a clear separation from his personal identity. He added that social media has helped audiences better understand actors beyond their roles, making that distinction clearer.

Speaking on collaboration, Bakre highlighted the importance of working with different directors, each bringing a unique creative process. He referenced his experience with filmmaker Jade Osiberu, describing her style as both intuitive and actor-focused. According to him, she allows performers the freedom to interpret their characters, stepping in to guide or refine when necessary. This balance, he said, creates an environment where actors can explore while still aligning with the director’s vision.

The actor also revealed the intense preparation required for physically demanding roles. For one project, he and his co-stars trained in boxing for nearly a year to ensure authenticity. The goal, he explained, was to look and move like real fighters rather than simply acting the part. That level of preparation meant enduring real physical contact during filming, including taking punches to the body. He jokingly noted that working alongside Anthony Monjaro made the experience even more intense.

Despite his growing success, Bakre shared that acting was not always a guaranteed path. He revealed that if his career had not taken off, he had plans to relocate to Canada to pursue opportunities in the financial sector. The alternative path, he said, was a serious consideration at the time, underscoring the uncertainty that often comes with creative careers.
